The purpose of this remote follow-up training workshop is, for participants to :

  • Gain a deeper understanding of conducting investigations, from planning stages to critically assessing evidence, including remote investigations, with expert guidance.
  • Share and address challenges participants have encountered while carrying and/or managing investigations since they attended the 4-day investigation workshop.
  • Exercise their interviews skills through remote interviews with actors and personalised feedback from faciliators.

Who should attend?

Mid-level and senior staff who are, or may be, designated to investigate allegations of misconduct by staff of the organisation, and/or manage such investigations, and/or remotely coach their colleagues into carrying such investigation.

Please note that participation in this workshop is open only to those who have completed the Investigations Workshop. A minimum gap of three months is required between completing the Investigations Workshop and undertaking the Investigations Follow-Up, to allow for reflection and consolidation of the learning through experience.

Course content

The course covers the following topics:

  • In-depth, step-by-step planning and conducting of an investigation
  • Strategies for dealing with challenges met by participants when planning and conducting an investigation;
  • Interviewing techniques for complainants, subjects of complaint and witnesses, including challenging and/or vulnerable interviewees;
  • Assessing information gathered during an investigation and selecting evidence to prove or disprove the allegation;
  • Investigation report writting and presenting recommendations

Participants will be requested to carry out remote interviews of characters played by actors on day 2 and 3 of the workshop, as part of the full process of planning and conducting an investigation. Participants will receive individual feedbacks from facilitators present during the interview.

Pre-workshop assignments and background reading

This remote follow-up investigations workshop will have four mandatory pre-workshop assignments. All pre-workshop assignments are geared toward planning a specific investigation and carrying out the remote interviews. Participants are also required to re-read the key documents relating to investigations prior to joining the course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will have an in-depth understanding of, and increased skills in the following:

  • Planning an investigation;
  • Conducting interviews;
  • Critical assessment of the evidence gathered;
  • Reporting on the findings and making recommendations;
  • Closing the investigation.

The remote workshop course fee includes facilitation, individual feedback and a course completion certificate.

The remote follow-up workshop is based on Zoom. Participants are required to have a computer on which they can instal and run Zoom, with camera and microphone access, as well as a good and reliable Internet connection.

*A small agency is one with an annual expenditure of less than 5 million Swiss francs.

Programme guide

Day 1: Review of investigation planning on the basis of pre-workshop assignments completed by participants; Challenges in planning and conducting an investigation; Interview procedures and  planning.

Day 2 and 3: Simulation exercise of the interviewing stage of an investigation, using a complex case study with individual feedback from facilitators.

Day 4: Assessing investigation findings and writing an investigation report; Challenges of remote investigations; Additional challenges raised by participants. Self-evaluation & organisational development;.

Note: this is the first time this event is done remotely and CHS Alliance might adjust the planning accross the four days as the Training Manager and facilitators see fit during the preparation. Participants will receive a more specific programme shortly before the start of the remote workshop.
