Whistleblower protection report – how to create a safe speak up culture – English

In 2021, CHS Alliance produced comprehensive Whistleblower Protection Guidance to support organisations to create strong whistleblowing policies that help foster a solid speak up culture. Establishing a whistleblowing policy is a foundational stone to encourage people who have witnessed or know of misconduct or wrongdoing to report it. Yet aid organisations must go further by understanding and acting on what encourages or deters staff from speaking up and reporting.

CHS Alliance’s new research report Creating a safe space for whistleblowers: how to build speak up cultures reveals the key steps organisations should take to encourage reporting.

The report gathers perspectives on how the aid system is treating whistleblowers, how aid workers feel towards about the topic, and what needs to be done to improve existing policies and practice to foster speak up cultures.

It was created through a series of conversations with staff from NGOs and UN agencies based across the world and with varied work backgrounds, such as support services, programming, safeguarding and HR. Many interviewed staff were either former or current whistleblowers.

Initial findings from were shared in a webinar held in March 2022 – catch up on the session online.
