Moving the Goalposts
MTG is a pioneer in football for girls’ empowerment in Kenya’s Coast Region. Started in 2002 in Kilifi, the women-led organization works toward a fair, just, and inclusive world where girls and young women’s rights are acknowledged, respected and realized. It employs an a-rights-based and sports (football) approach and focuses primarily on education, sexual and reproductive health and rights, economic empowerment, and leadership development. By positively influencing and equipping communities to provide safe spaces and opportunities for girls and young women, MTG contributes to the facilitation of girls to achieve their full potential. More than nine thousand girls (aged 9 – 25 years) participate in MTG programming annually in Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River counties.
Moving the Goalposts (MTG)works to empower Girls and Young Women (GYW) through a variety of programmes. Each year, MTG registers GYW to participate in its programmes through a community engagement approach. After registration, MTG provides training and support for GYW to develop their leadership skills, access education, and make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and expose them to livelihood endeavors and employability through training in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business skills. In addition, MTG works to eliminate violence and harmful practices against GYW, such as early and forced marriages. This is done through a male engagement program that targets the male cadre (boys and young men, fathers/guardians, local and religious leaders) to support the empowerment of GYW, as well as through advocacy and stakeholders engagement.
