CHS Alliance Humanitarian Human Resources Conference 2022 Online from 7 to 9 June 2021

The 2022 Humanitarian Human Resources Conference (HHR) will be an innovative and interactive virtual gathering for a growing global community of HR practitioners, researchers, experts and people leaders. Together we will collaborate to reflect, learn from each other and develop practical solutions for the humanitarian HR challenges of the future.

HR professionals and leaders operating in the humanitarian and development sector as well as those HR researchers and solution providers are invited to participate in this years conference. All those attending will be able to share their experiences, research findings, and insights, network and establish partnerships.

The HHR2022 will offer some participants led sessions.

We call for session proposals from participants that focus on the following topics:

  • Reskilling and upskilling HR leadership,
  • The future of work, particularly with a focus on the impact of COVID-19,
  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Power dynamics and HR,
  • Talent management in crisis-settings.

Online session formats

HHR2022 can facilitate a range of participant-led session, suggested formats are as follows:

Oral presentation: Pre-recorded video (optional) + presentation of a specific topic related to the overall theme followed by moderated discussions with a duration of 45 min. The session is structured to enable in-depth exploration of one topic and should have a moderator to steer the discussion with the audience (at least 20 minutes at the end of the session).

Panel session or debate: 45-minute live and moderated discussion with a self-formed group of two or three panellists. In this session type, the speakers each provide a very short introduction on the topic at hand. With the help of the moderator, they then will guide an open discussion. Most of the session’s time is dedicated to an active discussion between the audience and the speakers.

Workshops are action-oriented, hands-on 45 minutes sessions. These sessions could take the form of a demonstration, or a participatory how-to-session. Workshops are intended to train participants and engage participants in practice.

New and interactive session formats are encouraged and highly welcomed.

To make sessions more interactive and have sufficient time for discussions, sessions’ organisers are invited to pre-record their presentations in advance. Attendees can view these pre-recorded sessions on their own time and submit questions before the live session.

Since late submissions cannot be considered, it is recommended that proposals be properly submitted on the approved template and via approved submission medium.

Submission guidelines

Session proposals must be submitted via online form by or before 28 February 2022 17:00 CET. Proposals will be reviewed by the HHR2022 Steering Group. Only proposals submitted through the online form can be considered.

The HHR conferences are conducted in English, but participants led sessions could be held in different languages.

To ensure broad participation in HHR2022, individuals are limited to submitting one session proposal only. We give priority to sessions where the moderator and speakers are not single sex/gender and include perspectives from different countries and contexts.

Session organisers and speakers are required to join the HHR2022 and register for the conference.


Session review criteria

The selection process will be rigorous with feedback provided to all proposals. Proposals will be selected on the basis of merit and the need to create a well-balanced agenda. We encourage proposals that are original, engaging, significant, supported, clear and relevant.

Original: the proposal explores a new idea, project, or issue; discusses new research; or presents new ways of considering existing information. We encourage proposals that offer different perspectives on a topic to promote more constructive critique and debate.

Engaging: presentation format will involve the audience in some way or has high potential to attract conference attendees by addressing the needs of the community. Involve a committed and skilled moderator to guide speakers from the conception to the conclusion of the session at the conference.

Significant: the proposal raises and discusses issues important to people management, and its contents can be broadly disseminated and understood.

Supported: claims are backed by sufficient data; claims draw upon relevant literature and/or multiple perspectives; and limitations are described honestly (research papers only).

Clear: think of the purpose of your session, define your audience and what they will be getting from your session. Make your session title short and appealing and outline clear outcomes and describe session format in the session proposal form. Your title should not exceed 60 characters (not words) and your session description should not exceed 140 characters.

Relevant: your session topic is aligned with the HHR2022 theme of People and Culture in the Future of Work. Include a complete list of speakers even if not all are confirmed at the time of your session submission.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Who-is-who in a Session?

Session Lead/Organiser:

The session lead/organiser is the individual who submits the proposal to the HHR conference Steering Committee, acts as the leader and coordinator for the session development, and ensures the successful and timely execution of the session.

The organiser’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Proper and timely submission of the session proposal on the approved template and via the approved submission medium.
  • Open and prompt communication with the HHR chair and organising team.
  • Ensuring that all deadlines and requirements for the session planning and execution, as defined by the HHR chair and organising team are met.
  • Timely execution of the session.

When is the session?

An accepted session proposal will take place on either first, second or third day of the conference schedule and will be assigned a date and time at the discretion of the conference organising team. Each accepted session will be scheduled in the conference program for a maximum of 45 minutes.

Can my session take place on the day of my choosing?

All scheduling of sessions is completed by the conference organising team. Requests may be submitted to the committee for a special accommodation (time zones for example) but cannot be guaranteed, as the committee decisions are made with the full scope of the conference in mind.

Can my session be longer or shorter than 45-Minutes?

Each approved proposal will be allotted a programming time slot for no more and no less than 45 minutes in the conference programme. Organisers and speakers which would like additional time must submit a separate proposal where each proposal will support no more and no less than 45 minutes.

Should I recruit speakers before I propose and organise the session?

Yes. Potential speakers must be included on your proposal submission. A strong proposal will include a list of speakers who have committed to attend.

How many speakers can I include?

Debate sessions should have at least two speakers, and no more than can be successfully managed in the 45-minute session time allotted. As the 45 minute session time cannot be extended we recommend a session have no more than four speakers.  This would provide 10 minutes of presentation time for each speaker broken down into 5 minutes of talk-time and a five-minute question and answer period from attendees. For other type of sessions, one speaker can be sufficient.

Are organisers or speakers required to register for the conference?

Session speakers and organisers are required to register and pay their applicable admission fee to attend the conference.  Acceptance of a session proposal is not indicative of complimentary registration or financial support. The organiser is required to register for the full conference rate.
