Guidance on faith-based hiring and compliance with CHS Commitment 8

As more organisations learn and measure how they meet the Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability (CHS), this process – either through self-assessment or by a third-party auditor – reveals areas where further guidance is needed in the interpretation of some CHS indicators. One such area regards faith-based hiring practices within CHS Commitment 8: Communities and people affected by crisis receive the assistance they require from competent and well-managed staff and volunteers.

This document is the CHS assessment reporting tool. It is the document to be filled by all members of CHS Alliance who chose to conduct a CHS assessment, whether self-assessment or peer review, to present and submit their results to the CHS Alliance secretariat, who will review it and come back to the organisation within four weeks.

Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action

Staff wellbeing is not enough

In this study Dr. Scott Breslin examines the meaning of 'duty of care'. Today, duty of care denotes an organization’s responsibility for staff wellbeing, particularly in regard to physical and mental health at work. This is a noble goal and a significant improvement to previous standards of care. However, it remains an inadequate goal. The author therefore encourages us to discuss how we can create workplaces where staff can thrive rather than just be physically and mentally safe.

Johanniter International Assistance and P-Fim methodology to engage in meaningful community consultation

The P-Fim methodology can be used for humanitarian, development and peace building action. It has trained 900 staff from 300 organisations over the years, involving around 8000 people affected by crisis. Last year, Johanniter International Assistance – a member of the CHS Alliance - used this methodology for two exercises on community engagement (Berlin and DR Congo). The goal was to put people at the center of humanitarian response, and train staff to engage with communities in a two-way discussion.
