Member of the Month: ActionAid International Kenya


This month we are putting ActionAid International Kenya in the spotlight. As a founding member of the CHS Alliance, ActionAid International Kenya was among the first organisations to engage in a Self-Assessment process against the Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability (CHS) in 2016. They are continuously demonstrating their commitment to the CHS, more recently by contributing to the governance of the Alliance.

"Affected communities are the ones who truly understand their own needs" - Coffee with Denis Orioki, ActionAid International Kenya's Capacity Building Coordinator


Denis Orioki has been working for Action Aid International Kenya since 2012. Currently he supports five Local Rights Programmes (LRPs) in Khwisero as a Capacity Building Coordinator responsible for livelihoods and resilience. He has a background in disaster management and international diplomacy, and is currently studying towards a Master's degree in climate change.

"Women need to be empowered to make their voices heard" - Coffee with Makena Mwobobia, ActionAid International Kenya's Executive Director


Makena Mwobobia is the Executive Director of Action Aid International Kenya and recently joined CHS Alliance's Board. With over 25 years of experience in development work and more than ten years in humanitarian action, working for organisations such as Plan International and the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), she is a passionate advocate of women's empowerment and fierce defender of women's rights. Makena is also a mother of five, with six grandchildren.

Improving accountability by empowering women and vulnerable communities


As a strong supporter of the Core Humanitarian Standard, ActionAid Kenya has a robust and thorough approach to quality and accountability. Not only their work is built upon their Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA), which promotes programming that leads to community empowerment, but also they respond to the needs of crisis-affected people by encouraging women’s leadership, learning from their experiences to increase effectiveness and by embracing accountability at all levels.

Towards collective accountability in Chad


Since January 2018, we have been working in partnership with Ground Truth Solutions (GTS) in Chad to collect feedback from people affected by crisis and aid workers and, based on these findings, help the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) adapt the implementation of their programmes.

Sharing good practice at the Joint IASC and CEB Meeting of Investigatory Bodies on PSEA


On 26 November, the CHS Alliance participated in a panel discussion on good practice in investigations into sexual exploitation and abuse at a joint meeting of the United Nations investigations bodies and the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) in Geneva. This meeting was attended by managers of investigations sections from across the UN along with a small number of NGO representatives.

What is the state of the humanitarian system in 2017?


On 5 December, the fourth edition of ALNAP’s The State of the Humanitarian System (SOHS) report was launched at the Overseas Development Institute in London. The aim of the report is to outline humanitarian needs, provide an overview of funding and to describe and assess the structure of the humanitarian system and how it performed in the past three years.

CHS Alliance elects new Vice-Chair and two Board members


On 10th December the CHS Alliance announced the results of its Board elections, which took place electronically from 3rd to 7th December, at a webinar. The new Vice-Chair is Shama Mall, Deputy-Director of Community World Service Asia (CWSA). In addition, the member organisations of the CHS Alliance elected two new Board members, namely Allan Calma, Regional Program Coordinator at The Lutheran World Federation, and Makena Mwobobia, Head of Policy and Programs at ActionAid International Kenya.

Towards collective accountability in Chad


Ground Truth Solutions (GTS) is currently carrying out a second survey round in some of the most crisis-affected regions of Chad within the framework of a joint project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Based on the points of view and priorities of people affected by crisis, we will monitor the implementation of the Humanitarian Response Plan 2017-2019 for Chad against the Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability (CHS).

Towards a revised ‘PSEA Index’


In order to improve our support to member organisations and the wider community with regard to the Protection Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) we have started revising the relevant indicators of the CHS Verification Framework. Our aim is to allow our member organisations to measure whether their work on PSEA meets the Inter-Agency Standing Committee’s (IASC) Minimum Operating Standards and other key standards and commitments
